Vintage Virtuosos
Ososi - Mukhari

Vintage Virtuosos was founded by Chitravina N Ravikiran in 1991. It is a unique ensemble, aiming to project masterpieces of Indian music in an extraordinary manner, in some ways akin to the care, thoroughness, professionalism and dedication with which Western orchestras perfect, project and preserve their great repertoire. But Vintage Virtuosos differs from Western ensembles in several ways: For one, it is a combination of voices and instruments and innovative orchestration; for another, it is a melodic, and not a harmonic, ensemble. The group strives to practise, perfect, present and preserve works of great composers through concerts, lecture-demonstrations, recordings and similar activities all over the world.

The voices in the ensemble are highly talented and established artistes who have won much praise in both solo and group presentations. The instruments include some unique ones like ghatatarangam (an idea proposed by Ravikiran) and also others like the violin, flute, chitravina and mrdangam.

Press
"The ensemble performed in a tightly disciplined manner not often heard… each component performed its role so well and meshed so elegantly with the others…the whole greater than the sum of its parts… careful planning, strenuous rehearsing, attention to concert format and monitoring of concert in progress spoke of the influence of the Western musical systems (viz., their orchestral sadhaka modes) on Ravikiran…Ravikiran could play a significant role in helping Carnatic music take its first, difficult steps into the new century" The Hindu

"The group performs as one… chiselled to aesthetic perfection: there isn't a single superfluous oscillation within a gamaka, not a sanchara that is overdone… each piece stands out with a subtle but brilliant display of the raga. In the brevity and tautness of these renditions lies the greatness of Ravikiran's art and musical insight..." The Musicmagazine.com
