Sept - Nov end 2018 Concert tour, USA - Canada



Ravikiran Presided over the 91st Conference of the Music Academy Madras between Dec 15-31 and received the coveted Sangita Kalanidhi Title on 1st Jan, 2018. Ravikiran is only the 2nd artist on Chitravina (aka Gotuvadyam) after Budalur Krishnamurthy Shastrigal and the 3rd prodigy (after Palghat Mani Iyer and Dr Balamuralikrishna) to receive this. He is the only artist to have been honoured by the Music Academy at age 2 with a scholarship (in Dec 1969) and with the TTK Award in 2005 (age 38). In terms of percentage of service and contribution to art, Ravikiran's 48/50 years is an unprecedented 96% before this Award.

Ravikiran also received several awards and titles from various organisations including "Chitravina Nada Gnyana Mani" Dr M Chandrashekharan's Charubala Trust, Chennai (19th Nov), "Sangita Kalasagara" from Kalasagaram, Hyderabad (25 Nov), "Sangita Kavi Raja" from Carnatica Center (Dec 12), "Nada Vallabha" from Nadasudha, Velachery Chennai (23 Dec), "Astika Ratna" from Astika Samajam (31 Dec) and "Purandara Award" from Indiranagar Sabha Bangalore (26 Jan, 2018). Earlier, he had received the Chitravina Gana Praveena title from Federation of Sabhas on July 30 in Chennai.

Premiere of Ravikiran's "ALMIGHTY TRINITY"

Ravikiran's Operatic Dance Production, The Almighty Trinity (featuring the harmonious interactions of Brahma, Vishnu & Shiva) with Choreography by Smitha Madhav premiered on Sept 11 in Hyderabad India. It has been on tour in USA from Oct 1 - Nov 27th, being presented by leading gurus and schools of North America.

DIKSHITAR BEETHOVEN FESTIVAL, TIRUKKURAL History and 35-tala compositions premiere

On Nov 8th, 2015, Ravikiran's Melharmonic collaboration with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra presenting 3 compositions of Muttuswami Dikshitar at the Dikshitar-Beethoven Festival won critical media acclaim for "breaking new grounds".

Between January 12-14, 2016 Ravikiran made world history by setting to music the entire 1330 verses of Tirukkural in just 16 hours in Chennai, India. The Tirukkural Project was premiered in USA on March 26 in the Cleveland Festival by Sangita Kalanidhi Prof T N Krishnan and Shri V V Sundaram in India on July 4th by Dr Nalli Kuppusami Chetty, Shri L Ganeshan and Smt Sudha Raghunathan

His trail-blazing 35-tala set compositions, composed in 1997, were premiered in a 2-day festival on Feb 29 & Mar 1, 2016 featuring a dozen talented and popular vocalists at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Chennai


Ravikiran and Prof Robert Morris conducted a special College Credit Course on Melharmony and Indian Classical Music at Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York between Aug 3-7.

From Aug 8-15, he was one of the Guest Stars in the Carnatic Cruise (from Seattle) to Alaska organised by Carnatica along with Norwegian Cruise Lines.


On Sept 12 & 13, Ravikiran performed premiere concerts in the Chicago World Music Festival. On Nov 16th, 2014, Ravikiran's ta-ki-Ta Trio with 4-time Grammy winning drum legend Glen Velez and Voice Percussionist Loire Cotler were featured in the first of its kind Tyagaraja-Mozart Festival in Madison, USA where his Melharmonic version of Tyagaraja's Paramatmudu velige (Vagadheeshwari) was performed by the Madison Bach Musicians' String Quartet. He also performed solos in other cities like Los Angeles, Dallas and Columbus, GA.

Amidst a busy December season, he was honoured with the SAFE (Shanti Fine Arts) Award and title of "Sangeeta Shastra Virpannar".


Ravikiran undertook a concert tour that brought together Carnatic-Hindustani-Odissi dance under the same roof in a Trigulbandhi featuring Santoor maestro Tarun Bhattacharya and Odissi exponent Guru Sanchita Bhattacharya from Feb 21-April 4, 2014. A bulk of these concerts were Fundraisers for Shankara Eye Foundation's Vision 2020 Project. The events raised funds for eye hospitals in India.

Ravikiran's premiere of MAHABHARATA (KARNA SHAPATAM (Choreographed by dance legend Prof C V Chandrashekhar) and his collaboration with Pt Birju Maharaj during MAHABHARATA GEETOPADESHAM and VISHWAROOPAM in San Diego and Cleveland were landmark events for audiences across the world as the events were webcast live. He was also the Artistic Director in CASH & Asia Society's "Melody, Harmony, Melharmony" Festival in Houston on April 12th which included his jugalbandhi with Pt Snehashish Majumdar, (Hindustani Mandolin).

Special Recognition in USA: Melharmony Day in USA

The Mayor of the city of Middleton, WI, USA has decreed the 3rd Saturday of every November as Melharmony Day, which is a significant tribute to Ravikiran's concept of Melharmony and his contributions to world music in recent years. This Proclamation came on the Eve of the world's first-of-its-kind OVK-Bach Festival, which features two 18th century composers from two different parts of the world, Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi and Johann Sebastian Bach, who were among the greatest architects of Melody and Harmony respectively that the world has ever seen.

Multiple Awards and Titles

Ravikiran will be the first Chitravina artiste in Carnatic history to receive the coveted SANGEETA KALA SARATHY Award from Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, Chennai on Dec 15, 2013, which carries Rs. 100,000 apart from Citation & Medal of honour. He is also being awarded the title, VADYA BRAHMAM from Nadabrahmam Sabha on Dec 12. Earlier in Bangalore on Nov 29th, he will be receiving the prestigious Veena Raja Rao Award as well.

Mahabharata opera in 2014 with Pt Birju Mahraj & Prof C V Chandrashekhar

Ravikiran was commissioned by the Cleveland Tyagaraja Festival to compose the music and lyrics for a special episode, "KARNA SHAPATAM & DRAUPADI KALYANAM" in their 5-day production based on Mahabharata to be premiered in USA in April 2014. Choreography will be by dance legend Shri C V Chandrashekhar. He has also been asked to compose for the Final day of the production - GEETOPADESHAM, YUDDHAM & PATTABHISHEKAM whose cast includes Kathak maestro, Pt Birju Mahraj.Guru Rhadha and others.


Interesting Collaborations

Ravikiran's recent collaborations included a highly acclaimed duo with Mandolin U Shrinivas for The Hindu Jugalbandi Festival in Chennai as well as a standing-room-only concert with guitar legend, Roland van Campenhout for the Europalia Festival at Gent, Belgium.


Ravikiran has been on multiple tours over the past few months for concerts in major events in San Diego Festival, Cleveland Festival, NCPA Festival (Bombay) and SAPNA Festival (Chicago). Significantly, the premire show of his North American Melharmonic Orchestra (NAMO) won much acclaim at the Cleveland Festival on 31st March, 2013. He will continue to be in USA over the next few months on various performing and composing projects and also be conducting some camps on music in various states, punctuated by visits to India and other countries.

Another major milestone was introducing Melharmony and Carnatic music for the first time in a USA school district (Middleton, WI) on 12 March, 2013 through simple original compositions and arrangements of traditional pieces, which is in marked contrast to high-end virtuoso Western Caprices and other advanced pieces that Ravikiran has also composed.

Launch of website on Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi

On 14 Jan 2013, the inaugural day of the Hamsadhwani Festival in Chennai, Ravikiran launched, a website with extensive information on master-composer Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi predominantly created by his disciple Bhargavi Balasubramanian.

Melharmonic collaborations Sacramento Symphony - May 2012

After a series of concerts in USA that included San Diego, Honolulu, Cleveland and Madison, Ravikiran's collaboration with world-renowned Shirley Mordine and Natya Dance Companies 'Pushed to the Edge' premired in Chicago in April. He was also the first Indian composer to have collaborated with the Sacramento Youth Symphony for which he composed two pieces and also arranged Tyagaraja's Niravadhi Sukhada in Ravichandrika. Concert tour in Brazil - Jan 2012

Ravikiran's 10-day, 6 concerts and 2 lec-dem tour to the musically fertile Brazil enabled many of its citizens get acquainted with Carnatic music. The ability of the chitravina to create an enthralling listening experience for any audience type in the world was underscored by the enthusiastic response each sell out concert received in Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia and Sao Paulo.

December 2011 Season Break!

Ravikiran has announced that he will be taking a break in Dec 2011 Chennai Music Season due to certain composing deadlines for Western Classical Orchestra in USA and UK. The only exceptions to this are his solo concert for The Music Academy on Dec 18th, and a recital with Shri R K Shrikanthan on 21, apart from a couple of interesting lectures and panel discussions.

Concerts and Album with 5-time Grammy Legend and other world music stars

In Oct 2011, Ravikiran performed with Frame Drum legend Glen Velez, a 5-time Grammy winner and sax virtuoso George Brooks, Sangeeta Kalanidhi elect Prof Trichy Sankaran, charismatic American-style konnakkol and vocal specialist Lori Cotler in the Bay Area. Sangeeta Ratnakara and Ramayana premiere

In April 2011, Ravikiran was conferred the highest Carnatic Award outside India, "Sangeeta Ratnakara" by Cleveland Tyagaraja Aradhana for lifetime contributions to music and arts since his debut in 1969. In the same festival, Ravikiran premiered two of his operatic dance productions, based on the Indian epic, Ramayana (Bala Kandam and Yuddha Kandam). These full length productions - which featured dancers and musicians from India, USA and other countries - won much acclaim.

Online Lessons in Acharyanet and iTunes

Ravikiran has undertaken yet another initiative to make quality music accessible online. He has now entered into a joint venture with the dedicated music education website Acharyanet , to put up video and audio content of courses and classes online to enable people across the planet learn them easily. Featured classes and courses not only include his own but also by several other musicians, composers and gurus such as Shri Tanjavur Shankara Iyer, Shri P S Narayanaswami and Smt Rama Ravi. These courses cover a range of themes right from geetams to javalis and will musically enrich students of all levels. He has entered into another collaboration to put up audios of educational as well as entertainment material on iTunes.

Solo and Melharmony concerts in Switzerland, Slovenia and USA

Following his success in introducing Carnatic music in Slovenia in May, Ravikiran is slated to present a special concert for Slovenia Times newspaper group in Ljubljana in October. He will then proceed to USA for a short concert tour before returning to Europe for a Melharmonic concert with a specially constituted Swiss Ensemble led by Polivios, at the prestigeous Goetheanum in Dornach, at the Basel in early November. He is making a repeat visit to perform at the Basel Casino on Nov 26th as well.


First Carnatic Concert in Slovenia

In May 2010, Ravikiran became the first Carnatic musician to perform in Slovenia (Europe). He also conducted workshops on Carnatic music in Ljubljana. On May 29th, his collaborative production with noted Chicago-based dancer-producer Hema Rajagopalan, "DIVINE EQUATIONS" featuring stunning creations of Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi, premiered to a sell out audience at the Chicago Tyagaraja Festival.

Book and DVD of Own Compositions released Dec 2009

Ravikiran's students organised a special surprise celebration for his 40 years of contribution to Carnatic music in Chennai on 1st Dec 2009. Legendary musicians Dr M Balamuralikrishna, Madurai T N Seshagopalan, Umayalpuram Shri Sivaraman felicitated Ravikiran along with Mr N Murali, President of the Music Academy, Mr Y Prabhu, Secretary, Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Mr V V Sundaram, prime mover of Cleveland Tyagaraja festival and Mr Ramanathan, promoter of music and culture. This was followed by a vocal concert by the nanogenarian, Shri R K Shrikanthan. A book and 4-volume DVD, produced by Swati Solutions, containing 40 compositions of Ravikiran - as taught in a special workshop - was released on this day.

Hungary, USA, Belgium Festival 2009

On 12th September 2009, Ravikiran's collaborative concert with Jazz and Blues Guitar legend, Roland van Campenhout received an excellent response at the Flanders' International Festival at Ghent Belgium. Earlier in the year, Ravikiran was one of the first Carnatic musicians to perform in Budapest, Hungary. He also participated in the Tyagaraja Festivals in San Diego and Cleveland, apart from presenting concerts in other cities such as Los Angeles. Subsequent to that, he also undertook another a short tour to select cities in the USA in between 23rd July and 21st August.

His final tour of 2009 was a short trip to the USA in November. The trip included chitravina recitals at New York, Philadelphia, Columbus and Richmond and also a vocal concert at Cooper's Union, New York.

Belgium and Greek National Television Documentaries

Ravikiran was the only Indian musician to be featured in the documentary by the Belgium National Television Mega Series on India. He participated in a special collaborative programme with Jazz legend Roland Van Campenhout.

Earlier, he had been featured by the Greek Television on a major show on India with special focus on its music and culture along with Dr L Subramanian and Ustad Zakir Hussain. Both these programmes were shot in India.

World Slide Festival, San Diego and Amsterdam Festival, Holland

On 1st Nov 2008, Ravikiran's recital at the International Slide Instrument Exhibition and Festival organised by the Museum of Making Music won much acclaim. After a few other concerts in USA, he heads to Amsterdam to perform in the Amsterdam-India Festival. He has also been invited as a composer and musicologist in the India and the World Conference to present a paper on Melharmony.

Release of Navavaranams and Saptaratnas of Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi and Perfecting Carnatic Music I - 3rd Edition

The book featuring the lyrics and notations of Venkata Kavi's Kamakshi Navavaranams and Saptaratnas was released on Dec 8th at Nadabrahmam Festival by mrdangam maestro, Padmabhooshan Umayalpuram Sivaraman. The book features Forewords by Mr Murali, Managing Director of The Hindu and President of The Music Academy and Sangita Kalanidhi Shri T K Govinda Rao. This book has already been very well received by the music community.

Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi - Life and Contributions released - Aug 2007

Ravikiran's book, "Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi - Life and Contributions" was recently released in Chennai, India on August 18, 2007 by Mr Murali, Managing Director of The Hindu and President of The Music Academy. Distinguished dancer Ms Alarmel Valli received the first copy while Dr Mrs Y G Parthasarathy and Mr Krishnaswami, President, Federation of Sabhas were the guests of honour.

Awards and Accolades

Ravikiran was one of four Carnatic musicians selected for the prestigeous Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 2006, making him the youngest to receive this at 39. The Award was presented by the President of India, Mr Kalam, at Kamani Auditorium in New Delhi on March 1, 2007 at 11.45 am and followed by a short recital by Ravikiran. Ravikiran also became one of the first musicians to be honoured by the City of Houston, in April 2007.
